Working When Sick

One of the best benefits of working from home is the fact that when we are sick we can be comfortable versus if we had an out of the home job and had to struggle to make it in a different environment. Today my oldest woke up with a tummy ache and he is not feeling well. Then, to top it off I am also not feeling well and have to go to the doctor today. I am on pain medicine so I am loopy but still hanging in there. If I worked an out of the home job making it for the first hour would have been a huge achievement. However, since I am a work at home mom I can work more comfortably.

How to Work from Home When You Are Sick

Working from home can be a blessing and a curse when you are sick. This is because if you do not feel well you will be inclined to go lay down. However, if you have set schedule or deadlines to meet these tips should help you make it through your workday.

Focus on Easy Tasks: When you are sick focus on doing some of the easier tasks. Maybe market yourself, update your resume, participate in social media, or write a blog post. Do things that will not require a lot of your time or attention while also making sure you are being productive.

Take Frequent Breaks: If you find yourself sick on days when you have deadlines to meet take frequent breaks. Maybe go outside and get a quick breath of fresh air or lie down for a few minutes. The breaks will help keep your energy up so you can meet your deadlines.

Drink Plenty of Water: Usually when we get sick we find ourselves getting dehydrated easily. This is something that will use up your energy. So, to avoid feeling even worse than you already do, be sure to drink lots of water. When I am sick I usually try to drink a bottle of water every one to two hours and it really makes a difference.

  1. Wow! I can totally relate to this post. It’s been especially difficult to focus on urgent tasks lately because of my cold, but thank goodness I work from home! Water up, plenty of rest and easy tasks all sound good to me. It sure beats dragging my feet on my way to work and come back home a total mess!

  2. Oh my goodness! This is a hot topic for me! I get migraine headaches! What’s worse is I get hit when I least expect it half the time with no warning! So, working from home, as a freelancer works very well for me. I’ve had a couple days this week already (1)when I had nausea come first and then the pain. I didn’t even feel like being on the computer anymore and my laptop was right across from me. Instead, I sat back on the couch with my son once I felt like I could be outside the bathroom(after my medicine kicked in enough to make me more right again)and I ate some comfort food. It wasn’t until later on in the day the next day that I felt completely better. After that, it was either that night or the night after that, when I got hit again, without warning. (2)The weather was making soooo sleepy and it wasn’t just regular fatigue either. That I can over power. It was the weather and I was out of it. No energy, my eyes could barely stay open and it was near impossible to walk up the stairs. I used to work outside the home and had to leave early because of my migraines(I worked on the phone). I get sensitivity to light or sound, depending on where the pain or pressure is at(this week I’ve had sensitivity in my eyes like crazy). So, it’s nice being able to work from home and not have to worry about a schedule or deadlines. 🙂 Other than migraines, I get allergy and sinus problems come up too from time to time. So working from home is definitely a necessity for me! 🙂 Thanks for this post!

  3. It can be hard to work at home sometimes, but on days when you aren’t feeling well it is so nice to not have someone breathing down your neck about productivity.

    1. Sara,

I agree with you 100%. Today is one of those days where I just want to lounge around. I have been working since 6am though and I plan to take a quick nap around 12.
